“ If I can complete a marathon, graduating will be a piece of cake. ”

- Cesar, Aliso Continuation High School

Oh, the Places They Will Go!

SRLA congratulates the hundreds of SRLA seniors who will be graduating high school this year. SRLA alumni have done it all — watch some of their stories here and here. We look forward to the future and the Class of 2015 running LA!

Leader Appreciation Dinner

On May 13, 2015, Students Run LA honored the more than 500 volunteer leaders who power the SRLA program. Unlike coaches who sit on the sidelines, SRLA Leaders lead by example, running alongside students during trainings and races. They devote hundreds of hours mentoring students to get them on the right track both on the race course and in life. And they are VOLUNTEERS! At the Leader Appreciation Dinner, SRLA thanked these Leaders for their dedication in transforming the lives of at-risk youth in LA. Check our FacebookTwitter, and Instagram pages for photos from the event.

Celebrating Dreams

On May 3, 2015, American Honda inspired and celebrated SRLA’s graduating high school seniors at the Celebrating Dreams graduation event. American Honda brought together two of its charity partners, Ride For Kids that held a scenic motorcycle ride through the Palos Verdes Peninsula benefiting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, and Students Run LA whose students supported this great event. SRLA’s seniors kicked off the ride, then participated in a 5k fun run, followed by a post-race lunch and enjoyed fun and engaging activities with the Ride for Kids guests. The UCLA Blood Donor Mobile was also on hand.

For SRLA’s seniors, completing the ASICS LA Marathon was just the start of the journey. With 99% of SRLA runners finishing the full 26.2 mile course, SRLA seniors are now looking forward to crossing the next finish line and realizing their latest dream – graduating high school. May the Power of Dreams continue to motivate them on their journey.

Congratulations Finishers!

A hot one! Enduring record heat, more than 3,000 SRLA students and leaders raced alongside 200 Team SRLA charity runners at the 30th edition of the ASICS LA Marathon on Sunday, March 15, 2015. Once again, they finished at a rate of 99%.  For SRLA participants, race day began with an early wake-up call to catch a 4:00 a.m. bus to Dodger Stadium. The sense of anticipation ahead of the start was palpable, but soon the SRLA teams were off and running, filling the race course with a sea of neon yellow SRLA race singlets. Greater Los Angeles came out to cheer on the marathoners, and familiar SRLA faces could be found at the support station at Mile 22. There, volunteers joined hundreds of SRLA students, running alongside them to provide the extra encouragement needed for the final leg of the race. Crossing the finish line was just the beginning of the celebration! SRLA students made the walk through victory lane and on to Santa Monica High School where post-race festivities awaited – finisher sweatshirts; a buffet of pasta, fruit, and dessert; and lots of family, friends, and SRLA team members to celebrate their completion of the ASICS LA Marathon! After a year-long process of collecting used shoes, SRLA has officially broken the Guinness World Record for “Most Shoes Collected for Recycling.”  The old record stood at 16,407 shoes and SRLA’s new record is 18,302 shoes!
