“ If I can complete a marathon, graduating will be a piece of cake. ”

Congratulations 10K Finishers!

Congratulations to all the students and Leaders who completed the Main Street Halloween 10K!  Results are available here.  Thanks to participation by 120 of our groups, SRLA Cares was able to collect 800 lbs of plastic and 100 lbs of aluminum cans!

SRLA collects over 18,000 shoes!

After a year-long process of collecting used shoes, over 50 volunteers gathered on Saturday, August 9th at Belvedere Middle School and counted 18,302 shoes!   SRLA hopes to break the Guinness World Record for “Most Shoes Collected for Recycling,” which currently stands at 16,407 shoes.*

Shoes will be donated to SA Recycling, and a portion of the profits will go back to SRLA to fund scholarships for graduating seniors.

*Note: While it would appear that SRLA has broken the existing world record, it still needs to be authenticated with the Guinness Book.

Annual Leader Conference

Over 200 SRLA Leaders gathered on Tuesday, July 29th at the California Endowment for our annual Leader Conference featuring a variety of speakers, workshops and networking opportunities.  Everyone learned a lot and is ready to kick off the 26th season of SRLA!   At the conclusion of the day, the Leaders attended the Dodgers game, and had a chance to watch the Dodgers soundly defeat the Atlanta Braves!

25th Anniversary Gala!

SRLA celebrated its 25th anniversary with 275 guests on Thursday, May 8th at the Intercontinental Hotel in Century City.  The event featured KTLA Morning News Co-Anchor Chris Schauble as emcee and honored the ASICS LA Marathon with the  Founder’s Award and Costco with the Catalyst Award. As part of the opportunity drawing, a 2014 Honda CR-V was raffled off to SRLA Coordinator and Banning High School Leader Joe Mendoza!  The crowd was also treated to a fantastic video chronicling the past 25 years, and was addressed by SRLA alumna Ivania Zepada, who ran with SRLA for 6 years and is now a sophomore at Brown University. Check out this terrific event recap by LA Marathon Broadcaster, Toni Reavis. Over the past 25 years, SRLA has made a significant impact on the lives of more than 54,000 youth in Greater Los Angeles.

 ASICS LA Marathon

What a day!   With temperatures in the high 80′s by midday in Santa Monica, Students Run LA still managed to see a 99% finisher’s rate in the 2014 ASICS LA Marathon (our 25th anniversary race).  Read race recaps from students at Animo Jefferson Charter Middle School here. Congratulations to all the students and Leaders who completed the 26.2 mile journey, and a huge thank you to the friends and family members, sponsors, board members, and Running Them In volunteers who helped them get there.  Check out our media coverage on KTLA, the Los Angeles Daily News, the Pasadena Star News, and more!
