When I first started training I often became discouraged. When I challenged the elite runners, I always lost. Fortunately, my coach recognized my desire as well as my physical limitations. ‘Don’t think of it as a race,’ she counseled. ‘Run for completion.’ At first I couldn’t hear her, but continued failures led to a reexamination of my goals…I know my coach’s words are a prescription for life too. Life is not a race or a competition…I learned to set my own goals and to enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that I’ve worked hard to be the best I can.
